17 Simple Wellness Practices for 2017

17. Dance it out

Boost cognitive functioning, break a sweat and let go of stress by moving to the music. If you're looking for an illuminating dance experience, check out Asheville Movement Collective for regular Ecstatic Dance gatherings. Dancing is so beneficial to the brain that it's even being used to treat Parkinson’s Disease.

16. Drink more water

Staying properly hydrated is a crucial aspect of health. Drinking enough water each day maintains balanced energy levels, helps avoid headaches, flushes your system of toxins and keeps your skin looking luminous.

15. Get outside

Sometimes referred to as "forest bathing," spending time in nature is good for your mental and physical well-being. The forest boosts the immune system, lowers blood pressure, reduces stress, improves mood, increases ability to focus, accelerates recovery from surgery or illness, increases energy levels and improves sleep.

14. Develop a mantra

A mantra (in the western sense) is a word or phrase repeated out loud or silently to oneself to maintain focus on an intention, especially useful in meditation. There are no right or wrong mantras. Find what feels good to you. Here are some examples: I am love, I am capable, Let go of fear, I am grateful for the blessings in my life.

13. Incorporate essential oils

From immune boosting and sleep inducing to cleaning your house, essential oils can aid in your overall well-being. We use oils like lavender during massage to encourage relaxation and frankincense to create a sacred space for transformational experiences.

12. Take a vacation

Even if it's a "staycation," taking a break from the stress of work and everyday life can improve creativity, productivity, happiness and even your waistline.

11. Practice gratitude

Research supports an association between gratitude and an overall sense of well being. Start by appreciating the little things around you.

10. Take phone breaks

According to a 2012 study, 60% of people check their phone every hour and 73% of people felt panicked when they couldn't find their phone. Our relationship to our phones is changing our behavior and if used before bedtime can interfere with our circadian clocks disrupting healthy sleep.

9. Breathe deeply

The next time you find yourself in a stressful situation, remember you have a powerful tool to regulate your emotions; your breath. Breathing deeply (into your belly) regulates blood pressure and your heartbeat. Here's how to do it

8. Use coconut oil

With over 100 uses, unrefined organic coconut oil, is a great tool to have on hand. It's especially wonderful for the hair and skin and always our number one choice for massage oil.

7. Take a bath with Epsom salts

We are big advocates of relaxing in salty water around here and for good reason: epsom salt can soften skin, rid the body of toxins, relieve muscle tension, and soothe cramps and headaches. Add a little lavender essential oil for an extra relaxing experience.

6. Learn something new

Challenge yourself to learn a new skill or pick up a new hobby to keep your brain sharp.

5. Stretch and exercise

The benefits of exercise are limitless. Exercise increases stamina and flexibility, boosts endorphins and gets your heart rate up. Start small with a few stretches and walking and then add on more strenuous activities when you're ready.

4. Schedule relaxation

It's important for you to give your brain a break. Deep relaxation, if practiced regularly, can strengthen the immune system and allow you to respond to stressful situations more mindfully. 3. Meditate first thing in the morning

Beginning each day with a 10 minute meditation practice will set you up for success.  Start with deep breaths and your personal mantra or try out a handy app like Headspace

2. Make a manifestation list

Grab a pen and paper and make a list of the things you want to happen in 2017, be specific. The law of attraction is strong and you may be pleasantly surprised to watch your wish list unfold before you.
